Oral Hygiene Instructions for Parents
Caring for your child’s teeth and gums involves a few simple yet essential steps:
- Brushing Technique: Use a soft-bristled toothbrush and a pea-sized amount of fluoride toothpaste. Teach your child to brush gently in circular motions, covering all surfaces of the teeth. Brushing should be done twice a day, in the morning and before bedtime.
- Flossing Routine: Start flossing your child’s teeth as soon as two teeth touch each other. Gently slide the floss between the teeth and curve it around each tooth to remove plaque and food particles.
- Healthy Eating Habits: Encourage a diet rich in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. Limit sugary snacks and drinks, as these contribute to tooth decay.
- Regular Dental Visits: Schedule regular dental checkups every six months for professional cleanings and to monitor your child’s oral health.
- Drinking Water: Promote drinking water, especially fluoridated water, as it helps rinse away food particles and reduces the risk of cavities.
- Replacing Toothbrushes: Change your child’s toothbrush every three to four months or sooner if the bristles are frayed.
- Dental Emergencies: Teach your child what to do in case of a dental emergency, such as a knocked-out tooth, and keep our contact information handy.
